Mark Teixeira's first error of the season proved costly for the American League East-leading New York Yankees, with the Tampa Bay Rays capitalising to win 4-3 at Tropicana Field. The ball slipped under the first baseman's glove with the score tied in the seventh inning, allowing pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad to post the go-ahead run for the Rays. BJ Upton and Carlos Pena earlier homered for Tampa Bay, who halted a two-game losing run. Elsewhere, Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss hit home runs against their former team as the Oakland Athletics crushed the Boston Red Sox 6-1. Mike Moustakas had five RBI and his first career grand slam while Everett Teaford threw seven solid innings as the Kansas City Royals snapped a three-game skid in style, with an emphatic 11-3 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays. Also in the American League, the Minnesota Twins saw off the Detroit Tigers 6-4 to give manager Ron Gardenhire his 900th career win, Jered Weaver pitched seven scoreless innings to help the Los Angeles Angels overcome the Indians 3-0 in Cleveland and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-3. In the National League, Luis Valbuena's three-run tiebreaking double in the seventh inning set the Chicago Cubs up for their fourth successive win - 4-1 against the Atlanta Braves. Back-to-back homers from Garrett Jones and Neil Walker lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 11-2 victory over Houston - the Astros' seventh straight road defeat. Allen Craig hit two homers and Kyle Lohse gave up two runs on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings in the St Louis Cardinals' 9-3 rout of the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium. Finally, the Cincinnati Reds trounced the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-2, the San Diego Padres won 6-2 against the Diamondbacks in Arizona and the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Miami Marlins 6-5.
