Ninth-seeded duo of Austrian Jurgen Melzer and German Philipp Petzschner beat sixth seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland in straight sets to win the men's doubles title at the 2011 U.S. Open on Saturday night. Melzer and Petzschner overwhelmed their opponents to wrap up the match 6-2, 6-2 in 49 minutes. They hit 23 winners, 12 more than Fyrstenberg and Matkowksi, who had 12 unforced errors, six more than the winners. Fyrstenberg and Matkowksi also recorded four double faults against two to the titlists. The winners converted five of seven break points, but Fyrstenberg and Matkowksi made just one out of two. All of this made the contest lop-sided and soon. Fyrstenberg and Matkowksi ousted fifth seeds Rohan Bopanna of India and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the semifinal. while Melzer and Petzschner held off an unseeded tandem of Italians Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 in Friday's another semifinal. Melzer and Petzschner captured last year's men's doubles championship at Wimbledon. The winners will split 420,000 dollars.
