American Matt Every fired a new course record to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the Valero Texas Open. The 28-year-old's flawless nine-under-par 63 broke the previous mark at TPC San Antonio set by Ryan Palmer and Scott Piercy in 2010 by a single stroke. Every made a flying start in the tough conditions by opening with a hat-trick of birdies after starting on the 10th. After reaching the turn in 31 thanks to birdies at the 17th and 18th, he picked up four more shots on the front nine. Fun "Man, it was fun," said Every, who had nine birdies on his card. "I got a couple of breaks in the middle of the round to keep it going and I end up with 63." His pregnant wife Danielle walked all 18 holes despite Every telling her to rest up after nine. She will soon give birth to a son, which the pair have named Liam after Oasis front man Liam Gallagher. Every is a huge fan of the Manchester group and talked about his love for them after his round. Perhaps in the spirit of his favourite band, Every does things his own way. "Lately, I've been trying to do as little as possible with everything involved in golf," Every said. "Like, if I'm hitting it bad on the range, I'll just quit hitting balls and go home. And it's been working." Hunter Haas is Every's closest challenger after the Texan eagled the par-five 18th to post a 66, while fellow American Ben Curtis is a shot further behind in third after posting the best afternoon score. Swede Fredrik Jacobson shares fourth place with Americans Cameron Beckman, Jason Gore, Troy Matteson and Derek Lamely after all returned four-under 68s. Kevin Na, who memorably took 16 at the ninth last year, returned to par the hole but he could only muster an eight-over 79 and later withdrew.
