Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman has been retired after suffering a setback in his preparation for the Lexus Chase, trainer Paul Nicholls confirmed. The 11-year-old was due to make his seasonal reappearance in the December 28 feature at Leopardstown but a tendon problem has ended his career.“It is with great regret that I have to announce the retirement of Denman,” Nicholls said. “A scan yesterday (Thursday) afternoon revealed tiny damage to his near fore tendon, so this morning marks the end of an era for Ditcheat.” As well as winning the 2008 Cheltenham highlight, Denman also won the 2007 Lexus and the Gold Cup in both 2007 and 2009. “We are all devastated here at Ditcheat but Denman has given us some wonderful moments on the track,” said Nicholls.
