Tokyo - Arab Today

Former Japanese prime minister Yoshiro Mori will head the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic and Paralympic organising committee, officials said on Friday. Mori, 76, will serve as the committee's president while ex-deputy governor of the Bank of Japan Toshiro Muto, 70, will act as chief executive officer. "There is a need for all of us concerned to work as one," Mori, who was Japan's leader from 2000-2001, said. Tokyo won the bid for the Games in September, pipping Madrid and Istanbul, despite questions being raised over its handling of a meltdown at Fukushima nuclear power plant following a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011 Mori has been  president of the Japan Rugby Football Union since 2005 and is still a member of the lower house of parliament. He was seen as being instrumental in Japan's successful bid to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Tokyo previously hosted the Summer Games in 1964. Source: AFP
