Federico Delbonis, ranked 172nd in the world, surprised third-seeded Thomaz Bellucci Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the VTR Open. Delbonis was a 6-2, 7-5 winner, losing his service just once, and will meet No. 7 seed Carlos Berlocq, who defeated Diego Junqueira 6-1, 6-0 in 62 minutes. Second-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela advanced by defeating Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Joao Souza will take on Chela after an upset win over three-time former champion Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). The other quarterfinals Friday will send No. 1 seed Juan Monaco against Albert Montanes and Frederico Gil against Jeremy Chardy. This is the first ATP Tour event of the year on clay after a series of hard court tournaments leading up to the Australian Open.
