Ryan Briscoe earned his first win of the season, holding off Team Penske teamate and fellow Aussie Will Power to capture the Sonoma IndyCar Series race. Briscoe took advantage of a late caution flag to beat pole sitter Power who led the race for 57 laps. It marked Briscoe's first victory since he won in Texas in June 2010. Briscoe, of Sydney, seized the lead after Power pitted during a caution, allowing Briscoe to come out in front of his Team Penske teammate. Power got caught in heavy traffic leaving the pit area and also had issues with changing a tyre during his stop. Briscoe finished 0.44 seconds ahead of Power on the 2.31 mile, 12-turn road course. Ryan Hunter-Reay fell from five points to 36 adrift of Power in the overall standings after finishing one lap down in 18th. Hunter-Reay spun around and stalled in a corner after he was hit from behind by Alex Tagliani following a restart with 11 laps remaining. He was then penalized for contact with E.J. Viso. Helio Castroneves placed sixth and dropped to 41 points behind Power for third on the overall list. Scott Dixon finished 13th and fell 54 points behind the leader.
