Justin Verlander blanked Oakland on five hits over six innings Wednesday, helping boost Detroit to a 6-2 decision over the Athletics. Detroit won for the sixth time in eight games, including the opening two games of the series with the A's. The Tigers took a 6-0 lead into the ninth inning, built in part on three RBI from Omar Infante and a solo homer from Miguel Cabrera. Verlander (15-8) struck out five and walked three to win for the third time in his last four starts. Infante delivered a two-run double during a three-run third inning and his fielder's choice grounder in the eighth also drove in a run. Cabrera's homer was his 41st of the season and came in the seventh inning. Brett Anderson (4-2) allowed three runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings before leaving the game with an arm injury. Oakland has lost three straight after winning eight out of nine.
