Justin Verlander went the distance Wednesday and Miguel Cabrera homered twice in lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 5-1 triumph over Minnesota. In a contest delayed at the start by rain, Cabrera's late homers allowed the Tigers to pull away and end Minnesota's five-game winning streak. Verlander (9-5) struck out seven and gave up four hits while throwing 114 pitches. It was his fifth complete game of the season and the 19th of his eight-year career. The only run he allowed came on a Chris Parmelee homer in the fifth. Cabrera hit a solo shot in the sixth to give Detroit a 3-1 lead and he added a two-run blast in the seventh, running his season home run total to 18. Prince Fielder doubled home the first two Detroit runs in the opening inning. Brian Duensing (1-5) took the loss and received a scare in the fifth inning when he was hit on the left ankle by a line drive off the bat of Alex Avila. Duensing was able to pick up the ball and throw to first for the out, but he then collapsed in pain and eventually walked slowly off the field. X-rays proved negative and he was diagnosed with a bruise ankle.
