Adam Cook, making his second start since coming off the disabled list, threw a two-hit shutout Friday in bringing the Boston Red Sox a 5-0 win over Seattle. The first decade of Cook's career was spent with Colorado and his initial season with the Red Sox was interrupted when he suffered a cut on his left knee while covering home plate May 6. Cook (2-1) did not walk a batter and struck out two in what was only the third shutout of his career in 209 starts. He retired the first nine hitters he faced before giving up a leadoff single in the fourth to Ichiro Suzuki, who was promptly erased in a double play. The only other Seattle hit was a single by John Jaso leading off the eighth, but he was wiped out in a double play that ended the inning. The Mariners had another base runner in the sixth when Dustin Ackley reached on a fielding error by shortstop Mike Aviles. All the Boston runs came on homers -- solo shots in the fifth by Will Middlebrooks, Cody Ross and Daniel Nava and a two-run blast in the sixth from Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Hector Noesi (2-10) allowed all four home runs to take the loss.
