Wei-Yin Chen struck out 12 batters over 5 2/3 innings and Matt Wieters pounded a three-run homer Sunday in the Baltimore Orioles' 6-1 win over Oakland. Chen (9-6) yielded just one unearned run, overcoming four walks and three hits to post a victory that allowed the O's to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Athletics. After Adam Jones delivered an RBI double in the third, Wieters followed by blasting an 0-1 pitch into the left-field stands for a three-run shot, staking Baltimore to a 4-0 lead. Omar Quintanilla went 3-for-4 with a solo homer in the victory. Oakland starter Travis Blackley (3-3) was roughed up for five runs on six hits and four walks in a five-inning stint. Yoenis Cespedes provided the A's only RBI as Oakland lost for just the fourth time in 22 July contests.
