Argentina's Carlos Berlocq dispatched Eric Prodon of France Tuesday, moving into the winners' column in opening-round action at the Brazil Open. Berlocq had little trouble on the clay courts at Sao Paulo, downing Prodon 6-4, 6-0. Also among the victors Tuesday was Russia's Igor Andreev, who handled Chile's Fernando Gonzalez 6-2, 6-3, and Victor Hanescu of Romania, who ousted Joao Souza of Brazil 6-3, 6-3. Spanish qualifier Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, the oldest player in the main draw at 34, also advanced, outlasting Portuguese Rui Machado 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
