The United States opened the 2012 Olympics women's soccer tournament Wednesday with a comeback victory over France, while Japan also logged a win. France compiled a quick 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes but the United States stormed back before halftime with goals by Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan. The Americans continued their momentum in the second half on scores from Carli Lloyd and Morgan. The United States now goes on to play Colombia in Group G play, while France will try to bounce back against North Korea. World Cup champion Japan, meanwhile, advanced in Group F with a 2-1 decision over Canada. The Japanese rode first-half goals from Nahomi Kawasumi and Aya Miyama to victory and held tough after Canada got one back on a score from Melissa Tancredi. Japan will now take on Sweden, while Canada will face South Africa. Also Wednesday, Olympics favorite Brazil pounded Cameroon 5-0 and host Great Britain used a goal in the 64th minute from Stephanie Houghton to edge New Zealand 1-0 in Group E. Other Group F winners Wednesday included Sweden, which dispatched South Africa 4-1, and North Korea, which rode two Kim Song-Hui goals to a 2-0 triumph over Colombia.
