Chilean giants Universidad Catolica posted a 2-0 home win over Brazilian opponents Atletico Goianiense in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 tie on Wednesday. Following a quiet first half, Francisco Silva opened the scoring 10 minutes after the break with a precise strike, and two minutes before the final whistle substitute forward Alvaro Ramos gave the hosts their two-goal cushion. Universidad Catolica manager Juan Martin Lasarte said: "It wasn't a high-level game, but we always maintained the rhythm and the focus, therefore we are well deserved winners. Despite the two goals, the tie is not over and we must not to relax." The teams play again on 24 October at the Serra Dourada stadium in Goiania, with the winner going on to face Argentinian side Independiente or Uruguay's Liverpool. FIFA
