Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti named Cristiano Ronaldo in his starting line-up for their Champions League last 16, second leg against Schalke despite leading 6-1 from the first leg. Ronaldo was on target twice in Gelsenkirchen to take his tally to 11 in just six games in the competition so far this season. Otherwise, Ancelotti rested a number of his stars with Sunday's La Liga clash with Barcelona in mind as Gareth Bale was relegated to the bench, whilst Karim Benzema was ruled out with a bruised thigh. Youngsters Nacho, Asier Illarramendi, Isco, Jese Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata were all given their chance to shine on the European stage. Schalke boss Jens Keller made three changes to the side that was thrashed three weeks ago at the Veltins Arena as Felipe Santana, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Jefferson Farfan were replaced by Tim Hoogland, Kaan Ayhan and Chinedu Obasi.
