Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott brought Britain its first whitewater Olympic gold medal Thursday by winning the canoe doubles. It was a 1-2 finish for the British with David Florence and Richard Hounslow taking the silver medal. The top two teams were separated by just .36 of of a second after final trips through the violent waters that make up the whitewater slalom course. Florence had won a silver medal in the one-man canoe race at the 2008 Games. Three-time defending gold medalists from Slovakia, twins Pavol and Peter Hochschorner, settled for the bronze. They finished 1.87 seconds out of second place. Emilie Fer of France won the women's single kayak slalom, the only race for females on the whitewater course. She defeated Jessica Fox of Australia by .61 of a second. Maialen Chourrant of Spain won the bronze. Fox is a second-generation competitor in this event. Her mother won the bronze medal in kayak slalom at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Stepanka Hilgertova, 44, of the Czech Republic competed against both the mother and daughter. Hilgertova won the gold medal in 1996 while Myriam Fox-Jerusalmi was taking the bronze. On Thursday, Hilgertova finished fourth, two places behind the daughter.
