Botafogo moved off the bottom of the Brazilian Serie A table following a 1-0 home win over Corinthians. The visitors could have moved up to second with victory, with the top three not in action on Saturday, but fell behind to Wallyson's 29th-minute penalty.
Although Argentina international Mario Bolatti was sent off in the 72nd minute, Botafogo managed to hold on and move above Criciuma, Vitoria and Coritiba, who were beaten 3-0 at Goias.
The home side took a tenth-minute lead through Jackson while David doubled their lead midway through the half before Erik Lima's strike after 53 minutes made sure of a comfortable win.
Hernan Barcos went from hero to villain as ten-man Gremio were beaten 2-1 at Palmeiras.
Barcos broke the deadlock in the 56th minute from the penalty spot but was sent off seven minutes later which allowed Pablo Mouche to level matters shortly afterwards before Joao Pedro struck in the 74th minute to give Palmeiras victory.
