Powerful typhoon Neoguri brought strong wind and torrential rains to southwestern Japan, leaving at least 30 injured, authorities said Wednesday.
The typhoon also damaged at least 20 houses and left 83 homes flooded mostly in the Kyushu region, one of Japan's four main islands in the country's southwest, as well as Niigata Prefecture in central Japan, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
Some 40,000 houses in the Kyushu region were out of electricity, and about 89,000 people there and Niigata Prefecture were advised to evacuate to designated shelters. Air, sea and land traffic were partially disrupted in Kyushu, with flight cancellations expected to continue till Thursday.
The season's eight typhoon, one of the largest to strike the country in years, was located over the East China Sea, west of the Kyushu region at 3 p.m. (0600 GMT), moving northeast at 30 kilometers per hour with a central atmospheric pressure of 970 hectopascals, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Neoguri, meaning "raccoon" in Korean, is expected to approach Kyushu and cause up to 300 millimeters of rain in southwestern Japan by noon Thursday, the weather agency said, warning of strong winds, heavy rain, high waves and landslides.
