Turkish artillery retaliated against a fire by the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) in northern Syria on Friday, shelling its positions in the region near the border,
The fire was opened from the PYD-controlled Parsa Mount region in northern Syria to the Turkish side of the border province of Kilis in the morning hours.
The artillery units stationed in Kilis immediately shelled PYD positions in the region within the rules of engagement.
Earlier in July, Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik said that Ankara did not exclude the possibility of launching a military operation in Afrin if the situation in the region posed threat to Turkey’s national security.
Ankara considers PYD to be affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), listed as a terrorist organization in Turkey.
