Turkey''s President Abdullah Gul on Thursday approved the resolution adopted by the Supreme Military Council appointing four new generals to lead the country''s armed forces. The acting chief of staff General Necdet Ozel became the new chief of staff and he will take up the post after the cabinet approves his promotion. The council assigned General Hayri Kivrikoglu as the commander of land forces, while Admiral Emin Murat Bilgel became the navy commander and General Mehmet Erten the air commander. General Bekir Kalyoncu was appointed as the chief of military police. Prosecutors in Turkey have arrested numerous officers that they accuse of plotting to topple the government.
