An Indian military trooper was wounded Wednesday in a militant attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The attack was carried out at Imam Sahib village in Shopian district, about 55 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Today a private vehicle carrying troopers came under heavy fire from suspected militants here, during which a trooper was wounded," a police officer posted in Shopian said.
"The troopers on inputs suggesting presence of militants in the area were heading towards the village Thiariun in a private vehicle."
The wounded trooper was immediately removed to a Srinagar hospital.
Meanwhile, authorities rushed additional reinforcements of police, paramilitary and military to the spot to intensify search for the suspected militants.
However, police believe they have managed to flee from the spot following the attack.
"Searches are going on to nab the militants, however the firing has stopped," a police officer said.
On Tuesday two militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit were killed and an Indian policeman wounded in a gunfight in neighboring Pulwama district, triggering protests. A civilian was killed in the district when Indian border guards fired upon protesters during such a protest Tuesday evening.
A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
