Seventeen people were killed and 56 others injured after a bus travelling to Dar es Salaam collided with a lorry in Tanzania's central district of Kongwa on Wednesday, police said.
The grisly accident occurred in the morning at Pandambili area of the district when the bus travelling from Mpwapwa to Dar es Salaam collided head on with the lorry, killing both drivers.
"This is one of the worst road accidents to have been occurred in Dodoma region," Dodoma regional police commander David Misime said, adding that the lorry was ferrying water pipes.
Misime said among the killed were 12 men and five women, adding that nine of the injured are in critical condition.
He said police have launched investigations to find out the cause of the accident.
But he hinted that the driver of the lorry tried to overtake another vehicle when the accident occurred.
Julisu Balaigwa, one of the injured passengers, said the driver of the bus was in normal speed but abruptly he saw the lorry coming towards the bus.
