Sunni rebels killed eight Iranian border guards in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan near the border with Pakistan, semi-official Fars news agency reported on Tuesday.
The Jeish al-Adl, Iran's Sunni "terrorist" group, claimed responsibility for the Monday night attack, according to the report.
The members of the Jeish al-Adl attacked the cars carrying the Iranian border guards in the southeastern town of Negur on Monday as they were trying to cross the Iranian border from neighboring Pakistan.
In the slash, eight Iranian guards and three of the "terrorists" were killed, said, Iranian Police Deputy Chief for Social Affairs Saeed Montazer al-Mahdi, adding that "The armed outlaws fled to Pakistan immediately" after the attack.
On Sunday, local media reported that Iran's Islamic Republic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) dismantled a terrorist group "linked to foreign spy services" in the southeast of the country.
All the members of the terror team were killed in the operation by the IRGC's ground forces in Qasre Qand and Nik Shahr regions in Sistan and Baluchestan province on Monday morning, Press TV reported without elaborating on the number of people killed and their affiliation.
A large amount of weaponry, ammunition and communication equipment were also seized during the operation, according to the report.
In February, Iran's Intelligence Ministry announced that the Iranian security forces dismantled a terrorist cell in province of Sistan and Baluchestan, arrested many and seized 350 kg of explosives.
Sistan and Baluchestan, mostly populated by Sunni Muslims, has been the scene of bloody clashes between the Sunni rebels and the Iranian security forces.
