At least two Indian policemen were killed and four others wounded in two separate militant attacks in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday.
One policeman was killed and four others wounded early Saturday after militants targeted them with a grenade and firing in Sopore town, about 48 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Today at 2:30 a.m. (local time) militants threw a grenade and fired at a police party in main Sopore market. It resulted in wounding five policemen, and of them one succumbed to his wounds before being taken to hospital," a police spokesman said. "The other four have been immediately removed to nearest hospital and later on two critically wounded were referred to Srinagar hospital. "
On Friday evening militants killed a policeman in Bijbehara town, about 44 km south of Srinagar.
"A police constable was shot from a point-blank range last evening at Goriwan locality by militants," the spokesman said. "He was immediately removed to Srinagar hospital but doctors there declared him brought dead."
According to the spokesman, he was on the routine duty of regulating traffic on the road when militants attacked him.
Soon after the attacks at both towns, contingents of police and paramilitary troopers were rushed to the spots to trace the assailants. However, according to reports militants had managed to escape.
So far, no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attacks.
The two attacks in less than 10 hours has sent a tizzy among the policemen in the region.
Militants occasionally target police and paramilitary troopers in the region.
A guerrilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen too have been trained to fight them.
