New Jersey - UPI

A majority of U.S. adults said they consider same-sex relationships morally acceptable, results of a Gallup poll released Monday indicate. Fifty-four percent of American adults said they consider gay or lesbian relations morally all right, up from 38 percent a decade ago, results indicated. Poll results mirror the growth in support for legalizing same-sex marriages That figure has risen from 42 percent support in 2004 to at least 50 percent during the last two years, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said. Results indicate women, adults between the ages of 18 to 34 and Democrats are most supportive of gay rights. Non-religious Americans are much more supportive than Christians, Gallup said. Among Christians, Catholics are more supportive than Protestants. Residents in southern states were far less supportive than those in the East, Midwest, and West. Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,024 adults conducted May 3-6. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
