Rome - ANSA

The Italian government intends to use the army to help protect the potential targets of the anarchist terrorists who 'kneecapped' a nuclear-company executive last week. However, Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri said on Monday that only army personnel already engaged in terrorism operations will be used, stressing that no extra soldiers will be drafted in. "The army is already used (in anti-terrorism activities)," Cancellieri said. "There will not be any more men. It will be the ones we already have". The interior ministry is to hold a meeting of top security officials on Thursday to discuss measures to deal with the threat. A message signed by the Informal Anarchists Federation (FAI) terrorist group on Friday claimed responsibility for shooting Ansaldo Nucleare CEO Roberto Adinolfi in the leg in Genoa a week ago. The sites likely to need protection include the offices of tax collection agency Equitalia, which has been hit by string of letter-bomb and petrol-bomb attacks, including one at the weekend. Other possible targets of the anarchists include banks, ministries, police stations and prisons. Genoa employees of Ansaldo Energia, the Finmeccanica group company of which Ansaldo Nucleare is a subsidiary, on Monday staged a two-hour strike to say no to terrorism and express solidarity for Adinolfi, who left hospital on Friday.
