The Imam of the Vladikavkaz mosque and the deputy mufti of North Ossetia, Rasul Gamzatov, was shot dead late on Saturday.
North Ossetian Interior Minister Artur Akhmetkhanov told Itar-Tass that two unidentified young men had waited for the imam near his home.
“None of the witnesses could describe the appearance of the alleged criminals who were on foot. Our employees are trying to clarify the incident’s details,” the minister went on to say.
Cartridges and other material evidence have been found at the murder site.
In December 2012, unidentified gunmen shot the former imam of the Vladikavkaz mosque, Ibragim Dudarov, on his way home. His murder has not been solved.
