A medical helicopter crashed early Saturday several blocks away from a hospital in Wichita Falls in the U.S. state of northern Texas, where it was headed, killing a patient it was transporting from nearby Oklahoma and seriously injuring three other crew members, local media reported.
The air ambulance was transporting the patient from Waurika, Oklahoma, to the United Regional Health Care in Wichita Falls, about 56 kilometers to the southwest of Waurika, when it crashed around 2 a.m., the Houston Chronicle quoted local authorities as saying.
The patient was declared dead at the crash scene when emergency workers arrived. Local sources said the patient who died may have been the victim of a shooting Friday night at an apartment in Waurika. The other three crew members on board, including the pilot were listed in critical condition and were hospitalized.
It's not clear what caused the crash. The site of the air crash has been blocked off to allow inspectors from federal and state agencies to conduct further investigations.
