Greek firefighters have been battling up to 80 wild fires across Greece since Thursday which have caused minor material damages and the slight injury of an officer, Greek authorities said on Friday.
Most of the fires have been brought under control, including the most serious on the outskirts of Corinth about 70 kilometers southwest of Athens, where a firefighter was injured and a house, a car and hectares of olive groves were damaged.
According to the latest information by the Fire Brigade, blazes burning in wider Attica region, the Pelopponese peninsula and central Greece are currently not threatening residential zones.
The fires broke out amidst the first heat wave of this season which has gripped Greece since Tuesday, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection noted, warning of high forest fire risk in most parts of the country.
Experts called on people to be careful not to inadvertently cause fires and notify authorities without waste of time.
They expect that the risk of forest fires will recede during the weekend, since meteorologists forecast lower temperatures and showers in particular in northern and eastern Greece.
In several cases in recent years destructive forest fires in the country which have caused deaths and extensive environmental catastrophes, are linked with arsonists.
So far Fire Brigade officials have not found indications of arsonism in the fires blazing over the past few dayrs.
