Glasgow - UPI
A former editor at News of the World Scotland lied on the witness stand during the trial of former lawmaker Tommy Sheridan, police in Glasgow said Thursday. Douglas Wight, 39, a London resident was questioned by Strathclyde police for several hours and released, Sky News reported. He was charged with phone hacking and other breaches of computer security, police said. Sheridan, who served in the Scottish Parliament, was convicted in 2011 of lying during his civil lawsuit for defamation against the News of the World. He was sentenced to three years and freed recently after serving just over a year. "Officers of Operation Rubicon of Strathclyde Police arrested and charged a 39-year-old male with perjury before the High Court in Glasgow during the trial in 2010 of Tommy Sheridan, the former MSP, conspiracy (in Scotland) to hack telephones, multiple charges of conspiracy to obtain the personal data of members of the public in breach of the Data Protection Acts and individual offenses under these Acts," police said in a statement. A spokeswoman said the case was being forwarded to the procurator fiscal, the Scottish equivalent of a prosecutor. Andy Coulson, a former News of the World editor who became Prime Minister David Cameron's press secretary, has also been charged with perjury in the Sheridan trial.
