An aircraft belonging to the Ecuadorian Air Force had an accident in the westernmost city of mainland Ecuador on Wednesday morning, leaving two dead, the country's National Office of Civil Aviation confirmed
"Approximately at 7:40, a T-34 airplane numbered FAE-026, belonging to the Army Aviation School, had an accident during a training mission in Salinas, a coastal city located in the province of Santa Elena," Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE) said in a statement.
The FAE later said "the causes of the accident are under investigation by the Accident Research Committee." The two pilots killed are Captain Sebastian Espinoza and Cadet Galo Rivera.
Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.
This is the second incident recorded this week. On Monday, a small plane fell into a shrimp-farming area in the country's southwest city of Guayaquil.
The plane suffered a mechanical failure forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in the middle of the shrimp farms. The pilot had a slight neck injury, said the authorities.
