Coast Guard rescues 5 people from distressed sailboat off Wash

The U.S. Coast Guard said it rescued five people from a sailboat taking on water in foul weather in Puget Sound off the Washington coast Sunday. The rescue of three adults and two children from the 34-foot Slacker Jack by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Terrapin took place about 6:10 a.m. CST about two miles out to sea from Port Ludlow, the Coast Guard said in a statement on its website. The Coast Guard determined it would be unsafe to tow the disabled boat and it was left to drift. A day earlier, the Coast Guard said a 67-foot wooden pleasure boat ran aground and sank about 500 feet from a marina in Everett, Wash., when the pilot miscalculated the boat's position, the Seattle Times reported. The operator of the Cape Caution, built in 1939, got to shore safely in a dinghy.
