Nine people who volunteered to fight the forest fire in central Sweden were saved on Monday.
According to local newspaper Expressen, the nine volunteers had been trapped in fighting the massive fire for over an hour before they got rescued by a rescue team. The forest fire, which covers thousands of hectares, has been ablaze for the fifth consecutive day.
There are currently about 100 volunteers assisting to control the fire, which local authorities claimed as “the worst fire in Sweden's modern history”.
Emergency services declared on Monday they would no longer accept help from private people due to the risk.
Six helicopters are in service water-bombing the area, and three additional military helicopters are expected to join the effort on Monday.
The fire, which began on Thursday in central Sweden, now engulfs as much as 10,000 hectares, and is believed to burn for weeks or even months.
