Amsterdam - UPI

Officials in the Netherlands said Thursday that some 8,000 men have been asked to hand over DNA samples to solve the 1999 slaying of a 16-year-old girl. Marianne Vaatstra's body was found in a field in the northern province of Friesland, DutchNews.nl reported. Despite an extensive investigation, Vaatstra's killer was never found. Now, the public prosecution department said it asked about 8,000 Frisian men to hand over their DNA to help solve the 13-year-old cold case. All of the men asked to give a DNA sample lived within three miles of where Vaatstra was found, an area that encompasses 12 villages, the department said. No person asked to give their DNA will be forced to comply, the department said.
