2-year-old found dead in Oman well
Parental negligence prompts authorities to organise awareness campaigns

A two-year-old boy was found dead on Tuesday morning in a well in Samayil province of Dhakliyah governorate, according to the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA).
The child went missing on Monday afternoon. The rescue team at the PACDA found him dead inside a well in a farm near his family home at 8.45am. Gulf News couldn’t reach the toddler’s family for a comment.
This is not the first case where children had died after falling into wells in the country. In August, an eight-year-old was found dead in a well in Dhank province.
Seven Omani children have died in drowning incidents nationwide in the sea, wadis and wells in 2015, compared to six cases in 2014.
Drowning cases are common in Oman, as people continue to disregard warnings from authorities against swimming in choppy seas and areas prone to flash floods. Children make up the majority of drowning victims as they are not strong enough to swim against powerful currents.
Parents often leave their children to swim alone prompting the PACDA to organise several campaigns to warn parents against negligent behaviour.
In total, 113 drowning cases were recorded in 2015, compared to 150 cases in 2014
