
Two suicide attacks which rocked the southern Helmand and the eastern Nangarhar province on Monday had left 11 people dead, including three Turkish nationals and five attackers.
In the latest suicide attack which happened in Gereshk district of the southern Helmand province, eight people including four attackers were killed, an official confirmed.
"Four suicide bombers equipped with suicide vests and light arms attacked the district headquarters of Gereshk district at around 11:30 a.m. local time and police retaliated. As a result one of the attacker was killed in his blast and three others by police during a gun battle which lasted for two hours," district governor Mohammad Akbar told Xinhua.
He also said that two police and two civilians sustained injuries in the firefight.
Earlier, spokesman of Helmand's provincial administration Omar Zawak told Xinhua that one of the suicide bombers blew himself up at the gate of the district headquarters, enabling three others to enter the compound and began firing on those inside, which triggered gun battle with security personnel.
In the previous attack which occurred in Nangarhar province at 07:15 a.m. local time, three Turkish engineers were killed and two others wounded.
"The victims were traveling in a minibus. A militant rammed and detonated a tricycle packed with explosive into the vehicle, leaving three people killed and injured two others," spokesman for provincial government Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told Xinhua.
All the victims are Turkish nationals who worked for a construction company to construct facilities for police in the province, he said.
Taliban-led insurgency has been on rise since the outfit launched the so-called spring offensive on May 12 in Afghanistan.
