Two people were detained on Monday in connection with an elevator accident at a construction site in Istanbul which resulted in the deaths of ten construction workers on Saturday.
The ten were killed when the elevator carrying them suddenly plunged 32 floors to the ground in the central Mecidiyekoy neighbourhood. Police had been looking for the two suspects, said sources from the district police department in Sisli, where the accident happened.
Following the incident, Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu announced on Sunday that eight people had been detained. "An investigation is underway, and the number of those in custody might increase."
At the construction site, meanwhile, all the work has been stopped for an indefinite period of time, said a statement released Monday by Torunlar Real Estate Investment Company that runs the construction site.
