Fifteen people were killed and 14 others injured in a "terrorist" attack in northwest China's Muslim-majority Xinjiang region, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday.
The mobsters threw out explosive devices and attacked civilians with knives at a food street in Shache County around 1:30 p.m. (0330 GMT) on Friday, local authorities said in a statement, according to the report.
Police patrolling nearby killed 11 of the attackers, it said, adding that number of explosive devices, knives and axes were found at the scene. The injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals.
About 41.5 percent of Xinjiang's 21 million population are Uygurs, a largely Muslim ethnic group.
Located in a volatile region, Xinjiang has been battling separatism, extremism and terrorism since China took control of the area in 1949. In July, a gang of terrorists with knives and axes killed 37 civilians in an attack in Xinjiang. A local court sentenced 12 of the terrorists to death and 15 others to death with a two-year reprieve in October.
