One person was killed and 45 were injured after a truck full of people swerved off a road and plunged into a river in Russia’s southern resort city of Sochi, the local Interior Ministry’s department reported on Thursday.
The Gaz-66 truck carrying 46 passengers, including 33 children, crashed in the Lazarevsky district of Sochi, which hosted earlier in the year the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
All injured people were taken to a hospital in the nearby Black Sea resort village of Dagomys.
According to the Interior Ministry’s department, preliminary investigation results suggest that the vehicle’s brakes malfunctioned as the truck was rolling a downhill road.
A total of 204,000 traffic accidents were registered across Russia last year, which saw 27,000 people killed and some 258,300 injured, according to official statistics. However, the reported number of traffic accidents in 2013 indicates a 0.2% decline on the previous year.
