North Korea said Sunday it will retaliate "mercilessly" if the South fires at its waters in the Yellow Sea, five years after the North bombarded a South Korean island, killing two soldiers and two civilians, Yonhap news agency reported.
A spokesman for the North's southwestern military unit said South Korea is "scheming to attack North Korean waters again."
"The South Korean belligerents have forgotten their lessons from the bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island five years ago," the spokesman said, according to the KCNA, the North's state-run news agency. "If they truly respect the agreement reached in August, they must behave accordingly."
South and North Korea signed a landmark deal on Aug. 25 to defuse military tension on the Korean Peninsula.
On Nov. 23, 2010, North Korea fired artillery shells at the island off South Korea's northwest coast, killing two Marines and two civilians, as well as injuring 22 others.ٍ
