Mohammed Ziane, president of the Moroccan Liberal Party
Rabat - Arab Today

“The interest of Morocco requires the repeat of the legislative elections,” said Mohammed Ziane, president of the Moroccan Liberal Party (PML), at a press conference on Thursday in Rabat.

Ziane told reporters that despite Head of Government Abdelilah Benkirane’s negotiations with Aziz Akhannouch, the Secretary General of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), “the problem is that the outgoing ministers of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) want to join the government. Therefore, they are pushing Benkirane to accept in any formation of the government coalition.”

Ziane reiterated that “the repeat of the elections serves Morocco to shake the feeling of Moroccans. This might lead to emerge a new generation that can revive Morocco. This is the right solution.”

Last week, Benkirane said that he is waiting the return of the King of Mohammed from his tour of various African countries in order to decide whether he will form the government coalition or not.

Benkirane said that a second election could be a viable solution to what has been commonly known in Morocco as the “blockage,”, but that his party would prefer to avoid this solution, calling it “a tough thing.”

During the opening session of the PJD’s National Union of Labor held last week, Benkirane commented on his last meeting with Akhannouch to solve the standstill in negotiations between them, saying that he is hopeful that their latest talks will pave the way for the formation of the government.

Benkirane also expressed his readiness to include the Constitutional Union (CU) among the parties that will lead the government over the next five years, following the coalition of the CU and RNI of parliament into a unified group.
