The National Council of the Istiqlal Party (IP)has announced its supportfor Secretary General, Hamid Chabat and has referred Karim Ghelab, Yasmina Badou, and Taoufik Hjira to the Committee for Arbitration and Discipline.

The National Council of IP held an exceptional meeting on December 31stto deal with the internal conflicts resulting from the statements of its Secretary General, Hamid Chabat, about the territorial integrity of Mauritania, which created an uproar both in and out of Morocco.

During the meeting, Chabat announced that he would not take part in this government in person to “block the party’s detractors.” He also reiterated his party’s decision to participate in the coalition government.

The IP’s National Council released a statement after the meeting voicing its supportfor its Secretary-General and explaining that the party fully recognizes the territorial integrity of Mauritania.

Concerning Chabat’s announcement that he would not participate in person in the upcoming government, the communiqué stated:

“The National Council hails the sense of selflessness that the Secretary General [of the independence party] has expressed regarding his personal participation in the government,” adding it “appreciates the great sacrifices” he has made.

The council also agreed to Chabat’s request during the meeting to allow a council to exert part of his prerogatives:

“In this regard, the party positively responds to the will of the Secretary-General consisting of authorizing a temporary council to bear part of his prerogatives until the 17th conference of the party is held.”

In response to a communiqué signed by many old and new party members condemning Chabat’s blunders, the National Council announced that it will bereferring three leading members of the party to the Committee for Arbitration and Discipline.

“Based on the rules of the party, the National Council recommends the referral of Karim Ghelab, Yasmina Badou, and Taoufik Hjira to the National Committee for Arbitration and Discipline”
