Egyptian president names advisers

A spokesman for the Egyptian president said a new team of advisers represented a broad political spectrum, though Islamist leaders dominate the panel. Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi outlined his list of political advisers as his new government takes shape. Morsi, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, picked six members from FJP, including Acting Chairman Essam el-Erian. Protesters last week expressed frustration over the Muslim Brotherhood's political dominance in the post-revolutionary landscape in Egypt. Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali, however, said the team represented "different colors of the political spectrum," reports Egyptian news agency al-Ahram. Members of the Islamist al-Nour Party secured three seats on the presidential advisory committee. The list of 17 consultants and four assistants included Christian leaders, independents and women, including Cairo University political science Professor Pakinam el-Sharkawi, who'll serve as a political adviser to the president. The announcement comes as a delegation of U.S. economic officials arrives in Cairo to meet with the country's new political leaders. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo states the delegation "will discuss with the Egyptian government steps to rebuild stability and confidence in Egypt as well as grow its economy, and encourage completion of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund."
