The Dubai Police Traffic Department revealed the launch of a new radar device to catch drivers who violate laws regarding driving on mandatory routes.

Major-General Eng. Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Dubai Police Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Operations, said that the Traffic Department is responsible for enforcing traffic laws and preventing violations by some drivers, on the main and side streets of the emirate.

The Traffic Department received many complaints regarding drivers who do not follow the mandatory routes on various Dubai streets, he said while highlighting the fact that these violations could harm people and obstruct pedestrians from freely and safely crossing the roads, not to mention the accidents and injuries caused by these traffic violations, that prompted the Dubai Police Traffic Department to search for innovative solutions.

According to Major-General Al Zafee, the Dubai Police Traffic Department designed a new radar device that can catch drivers who violate the mandatory routes, as vehicles can be tracked while driving from side streets to main streets when overtaking, and while obstructing traffic and the rights of pedestrians.

He highlighted the Dubai Police Traffic Department’s recent plans to prepare workshops for developing police technologies, according to the needs of Dubai, including a radar that was designed and developed locally for apprehending drivers who commit these violations.

He added that the results achieved by the use of the radar were encouraging, a week after its introduction at the beginning of February on the streets of Rabat, as 3,000 violations for not following the mandatory routes were discovered.

He also added that the device contains a camera, which takes pictures of cars as they move from one lane to another while driving from side streets to main streets, and can catch violating vehicles at a distance of 1,000 meters in both directions of the side and main streets.

He clarified that this type of traffic violation has caused 145 accidents, with 7 deaths and 78 injuries last year, while a total of 290,336 violations were registered, of which 54,036 were present violations and 236,300 were absent violations. He also pointed out that this new device will greatly contribute to the enforcement of traffic laws and will assist the flow of traffic on the streets of Dubai.
