Former Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei and his driver were detained for three hours in East Jerusalem for speeding, Israeli police said. An Israeli police patrol stopped Qurei's vehicle on the Ramallah-Abu Dis road Saturday for speeding almost twice the permitted rate, Israel Radio reported. Qurei's driver refused to hand over his license and the two locked the doors and closed the windows and remained sitting inside the car, ignoring police requests to cooperate, Israel's Channel 2 reported. Television footage showed Palestinian motorists and passers-by surrounding Qurei's vehicle, which had been blocked by police, and declared the police had no jurisdiction over the former prime minister. After a three hour wait, police let Qurei and his driver continue their journey. The driver was served a summons to appear before the Traffic police department, the radio said.
