As many as 981 passengers crossed the Egypt-Gaza Rafah crossing on Monday on both directions, a well-placed source at the terminal said. Crossing to Gaza were 464 persons, while 517 coming from the besieged enclave crossed the terminal into Egypt, the source said. Up to 920,775 passengers crossed the terminal since a new mechanism for its operation was adopted in May 2011. The Rafah crossing has been the principal connection between Gaza's 1.8 million residents and the outside world since Israel slapped a crippling siege on the enclave.
