A building under construction in Downtown Dubai, near Burj Khalifa, caught fire on Saturday afternoon. Thick smoke billowed into the sky from the building and 67 workers were evacuated, officials said. According to Brigadier Ahmad Obaid Al Sayegh, Assistant Director-General of the Dubai Civil Defence, the blaze broke out in a services manhole containing building materials which led to the rapid spread of smoke. “A total of 67 workers were evacuated; four of whom suffered suffocation due to smoke,” Al Sayegh said, adding that the fire had been contained.Meanwhile, Khalifa bin Drai, Executive Director of the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, said 58 workers, who were in the building when it went up in flames, were treated on the spot. Forty-five workers were given first-aid and oxygen. He added that 13 other workers were shifted to Al Baraha Hospital and Rashid Hospital. Four cases were sent to Al Baraha Hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health, while Rashid Hospital affiliated to the Dubai Health Authority, received nine injured workers. He pointed out that the workers sustained minor injuries. Five ambulances with medical teams and a mobile emergency hospital were dispatched to the area. source : Khaleejtimes
