Muscat - Arabstoday
Two people were killed and one was injured in an accident on Saturday morning in Amarat suburb of Muscat, according to a Royal Oman Police (ROP) press release. The driver lost control of his vehicle while on his way from Quriyat to Amarat, and was flung to the side of the road, killing two occupants and injuring another. Meanwhile, the ROP statistics revealed that 21 people were killed last week in road accidents across the country and 190 were injured in 128 accidents registered with the police. The ROP statistics also show that the number of accidents rise during Ramadan. The ROP have urged motorists to be extra cautious and not to rush, especially during iftar time.Last year 585 road accidents occurred during Ramadan and 93 people were killed and 896 injured. “Tired bodies and momentary drowsiness can cause fatal accidents, therefore motorists should observe extreme caution in the evening as they return home for iftar,” a spokesperson for the ROP said. He also pointed out that incidents of pedestrians being hit at dusk also increase during Ramadan as people speed to reach home faster. “A rash driver who endangers the lives of other people will be awarded a jail term not more than one year and a fine not more than 500 Omani riyals (Dh4,751) or both,” he said. from gulfnews.com
