Liverpool - Arabstoday
Jonjo Shelvey admits it was a special feeling to score his first Barclays Premier League goal for Liverpool as they recorded an emphatic 4-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield on Tuesday night. The 20-year-old found the back of the net with a controlled volley from 35 yards after visiting goalkeeper Ross Turnbull mis-kicked his attempted clearance. Shelvey's strike added to earlier goals from Michael Essien (OG), Jordan Henderson and Daniel Agger – and afterwards the midfielder couldn't hide his joy. "I'm delighted to score my first Premier League goal, especially at Anfield," he told Liverpoolfc.tv. "It was a great performance from the team and we started off really well. If we'd been able to do that on Saturday, it may have been a different story and we'd have the FA Cup as well. "I saw the 'keeper mis-kick and the ball fell on my right foot. I heard the crowd shouting 'shoot', so I thought, 'Why not?' "It came off sweetly and went into the back of the net." He added: "It's been a stop-start season at home and we've not punished teams as often as we would have liked, but to beat Chelsea, who are going into the Champions League final, 4-1 in one of our last games of the season is an achievement." Shelvey raced towards the Centenary Stand after netting and mimicked wearing glasses with his hands. He explained: "I celebrated like that because my brother wears glasses – everyone in the family wears glasses except for me. "He and I like a bit of banter. He was up in the box and it was a nice moment for him and my family." On a night to remember, Liverpool had several strong candidates for the man-of-the-match accolade, including Shelvey who impressed in a central midfield role. And the No.33 admits he felt he turned in perhaps his best performance for the club on what was his 15th first-team appearance of the season. Shelvey reflected: "I think it was one of my best games for Liverpool. "It's nice to play, and the more and more you do, the more used you get to the match fitness and sharpness. I felt I proved I am worthy of getting another game. Hopefully I can get another one on Sunday. "Personally, I think I've done okay (this season). I went on loan and enjoyed my time at Blackpool. I came back here and have challenged for a place. Hopefully I can cement one next season." Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium present Liverpool with their final challenge of 2011-12 on Sunday – and Shelvey insists the Reds will travel to Wales eager to sign off in style. "I expect them to have the ball for long periods, but we'll play our own game and the gaffer will have a game plan," he said. "We go back onto the training pitch on Thursday, so we'll work on it and continue to be professional until the end of the season. "It would be nice to finish with a win. It's important we get the three points and give ourselves a platform to build on for next season."
