Tehran - FNA
Four Afghan police officers died in a ‘mine’ blast in Afghanistan’s Southern province of Kandahar. Takhtapol District governor Mahmoud Achakzai said, "A mine planted by militants on a road in Takhtapol district struck a police vehicle on Sunday evening leaving four border police personnel dead including Sediqullah, a checkpoint commander." No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Achakzai blamed the Taliban militants for the blast, press tv reported. The attack on Sunday was carried out a day after a police headquarters in Eastern Afghanistan was also hit by a bomb attack. Two Afghan policemen were killed in the incident. Improvised explosive devices, including roadside bombs, are by far the most lethal weapons militants use against Afghan forces, foreign troops, and civilians. Separate bomb explosions also killed five people and injured several others in other regions of Afghanistan on Sunday. Afghanistan remains gripped by insecurity over a decade into the US-led invasion of the country carried out as part of the so-called war on terror. Foreign forces are scheduled to withdraw from Afghanistan and hand over security to the Afghan government forces by the end of 2014. The United States, however, intends to keep some forces in Afghanistan for "training and counter-terrorism operations".
